Having spent many years making quilt-sized semi figurative wall-hangings, more recently I have been concentrating on oil painting. Whilst I dislike the restrictions that simple catagories impose, I suppose my work could be described as abstract landscape. I believe that where the work is made has a huge influence on its outcome. To this end, I go on as many artist residencies as possible. Rather than a straight representation of the landscape, my work makes reference to the many little adventures I might have whilst there, eg the bus not turning up, stranding me in a storm at nightfall 50 miles from my base whilst in Iceland.
I build up layers of paint, scraping and scratching through to reveal what's beneath. I like to include tiny fragments of the place, gravel, sand, ash etc feature frequently, giving texture to the work.
